Club History

Camogie has been at the heart of the community in Straffan for decades. There are records of camogie being played in Straffan long before 1984, however in 1984, Anne Hughes (nee Kearney) and Fiona Farrell re-formed Straffan Camogie Club as we know it today. Many are curious to hear the origins of the camogie club’s chosen colours of tangerine and black, considering blue and white were already established as the club colours of Straffan GAA. Tangerine and black were chosen as the club’s signature colours of blue and white were already chosen as the representing colours of neighbouring camogie club, Celbridge.

Over the years, Straffan Camogie Club has comprised of members from Straffan and its surrounding areas including; Celbridge, Clane, Rathcoffey, Sallins, Prosperous and Allenwood. The earliest achievements at the club date back to the mid 1990s, when the junior team succeeded in securing the 1993 Kildare Junior League title. In 1994 both the Junior League and Championship titles were secured by Straffan under the guidance of Matty Poyntan.

Our Club Today

There have been major developments to our club facilities in Straffan GAA over the years. In 2018, works on our state-of-the-art astro pitch were completed, in 2020 our skills wall and walking track were opened at the club and as of this year, we are proud to showcase our brand-new main pitch floodlights. Further development is ongoing at Straffan and we look forward to the opening of our new full-size pitch and extended walking track towards the end of this year.

The development of our club facilities along with the support and development of each of our camogie teams would not be possible without the generosity of our club's sponsors. A huge thank you to each and every one of our sponsors.

Straffan Camogie Club has grown from strength to strength with many proud accomplishments achieved throughout the years. Our club has very much established itself as a force to be reckoned with at an underage level, with players involved from the young age of 5 and 6 in our nursery group, right up to our older girls on our U17s team. As of this year, and for the first time in over 25 years, Straffan Camogie are proud to be represented at an adult level by our newly formed junior camogie team. We are very proud to have a total of 181 members registered with our club, which includes 139 underage players and 12 adult playing members.

Just as the achievements of our players are valued, so too are the accomplishments of our mentors, volunteers and supporters. Straffan Camogie is proud to be home to two winners of the Kildare Volunteer of the Year Award- Fiona Farrell (2012) and Fiona Timmons (2020). Camogie in Straffan is driven by all of the hard work and dedication of our brilliant volunteers.

The dedication and support of our wider club committee and our skilled group of team mentors and coaches is a real driving force behind our small club. Our wonderful coaches and mentors are constantly seeking out new ways to help bring their teams skills to the next level and have helped our club progress to Straffan Camogie as we know it today!

We encourage anyone who is interested in camogie, regardless of previous experience, to get in touch with us and explore the possibility of getting involved with our vibrant club.
